Drawing and painting figures has been my passion since I was in third grade when I began sketching classmates instead of completing my assignments. After three years of making non-objective work in encaustic I have returned to the figure in this series, perhaps just temporarily. I decided to challenge myself by painting the nudes in encaustic. This laborious, exciting and frustrating technique (hot beeswax, resin and pigment) pushes all my artistic boundaries. In this process-oriented technique I can build translucent layers of hot, molten color, scraping, incising, melting, fusing, creating a surface that expresses emotion, texture and energy. The making of these paintings is often like traveling in uncharted waters. I do a lot of scraping away and starting over. When the painting "works" my heart and soul are in sync with the materials and the spirit of the painting." -- Eschwan |
