Oil and Cold Wax

Oil paint and cold wax is blended to create a layered matte surface. I paint on cradled board, panel and paper. Since no heat is used, it can be used with less ventilation than encaustic. The cold wax paste is mixed with oil paints and is moved, scraped and manipulated to build many layers of color and texture.

Workshops

I offer workshops in cold wax and oil. The technique and results are quite different than encaustic. It doesn't require heating up of the wax as it's mixed with solvents which keep it firm, yet soft.  It's got a rather "buttery" consistency which allows it to be easily mixed with oil paints from the tube, or with powdered pigments.  What cold wax lends to a painting, is a slight translucence - depending upon how much wax to paint you use - and it speeds up the drying time of the oils, and once dry, it allows you to really attack the surface - scraping, gouging, scoring to add texture and depth.
I have no more than 4 students at a time so you will receive individual attention. All the materials and inspiration are provided. The  workshops can be playful and freeing, and productive.. 10 hours in the in studio over the two days of the workshop will give you all the information you need to start creating your own cold wax painting.  I supply all the materials to layer, build, move and scrape the paint. I encourage to express your own creativity and not just follow how I paint.  The cold wax and oil paint can be manipulated to create exciting abstract or figurative paintings.  No prior art experience is necessary.
San Miguel de Allende is an artists' dream. Galleries, exhibitions, art tours abound. When you are not in class your time can be filled with artistic discovery and choosing from hundreds of fantastic restaurants.
