A recent comment . "Out of many encaustic artists who give classes, Eschwan's work and art knowledge really stands out.
Not only does she understand art concepts and methods, but also principles including composition and balance that lacks in some. With Eschwan, you get the full learning experience. I highly recommend her to both beginning and intermediate students. Note; Eschwan had nothing to do with this post whatsoever. This is merely a recommendation from one of her art peers." |

There is fresh air ventilation in the studio
My hundreds of students have experienced this exciting process and some have gone on to set up their own encaustic studios so they can continue to explore the many techniques and effects that can be created in encaustic.
I have been blessed to have shared my knowledge of the encaustic technique and cold wax painting for over 19 years here in San Miguel de Allende.
The classes bring me joy and I love being able to offer them. It takes a lot of preparation to make them right for each participant. I take time to decide where to focus on the techniques, how to fulfill the emotional elements of the class and then adding new inspirations. That will hopefully create a personal experience for each participant.
I now ask those interested in experiencing painting with wax and fire (encaustic) to let me know when they will be in San Miguel and we can plan the dates of the classes that best suit our schedules.
We can focus on painting portraits or abstracts ,transfers or photo encaustic.
In my classes, I not only teach you a technique, but also composition, seeing shapes, color mixing and more.
The classes examine the specific characteristics which make wax a unique material to work with; including opacity, temperature, adhesion, and texture. Next, we look at the many ways encaustic is adaptable to other
mediums and artistic processes. Additional techniques we explore include collage, image transfer, and combining oil and wax. After each demonstration, you are given time to work hands-on with the wax to
explore each technique at your own pace. By the third day I will spend at least an hour working personally with each student, answering any and all questions.
Of course I offer introduction to encaustic, but more recently I find that people who have some experience with the medium come to learn more than just making sample boards.
A two day workshop, that is 12 hours of fun, and experiencing many encaustic techniques. I love sharing everything I know about this medium, and it is a lot. I shared instruction and demos of how to make encaustic medium and the paint; how to create and use laser transfers, build pattern and detail with a hot pen, incorporate rice papers, oil glazes and more.
Students in my classes make their own paintings with my direction and no one makes the same painting.
In the intensive 4 - 5 day workshops we cover;
1. glass-like surfaces
2. mark making with textures, china markers, oil sticks and more
3. oil glazing and pan pastels
4. drawing with a glass pen and ink
5. rice paper ink drawing and rice paper colored with watercolor
6. Incising and carving
7. shellac burn
8. tranfers
9. stencils
10. dipping and collage
